MISCELLANEOUS : ECHOED MOMENTS : PADMÉ & LUKE

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Going Up: Luke was not the first Skywalker to use an ascension cable to get the upper hand (perhaps literally) on a foe.

Unanswered Pleas: In ROTJ, Vader says "Obi-Wan once thought as you do" to Luke, but it seems far more likely that he was really thinking of Padmé. (I sure don't remember Obi-Wan trying to "save" Anakin in ROTS.) Mother and son both face pivotal bittersweet confrontations with the former Anakin Skywalker. In both cases, Vader entreats the other person to join him at the head of the Empire - and in both cases is refused. Likewise, both mother and son make entreaties of their own: for Vader to remember the good in himself and renounce the Dark Side. Neither ends well, though Luke does eventually succeed where his mother did not.

Hope: On Endor, Luke echoes word-for-word the sentiment his mother expressed with her dying breath - that there is good remaining in Vader, that Anakin Skywalker can be saved. Perhaps Luke does have some primal sort of memory of her, after all - remember, it was Luke that Padmé was able to briefly touch, that Obi-Wan held in his arms next to Padmé as she died.
