ForceCast Interviews Catherine Taber at TCW Season 4 Premiere - September 10, 2011
Jimmy Mac: What excites you about about season 4 of The Clone Wars?
Catherine: You know, I'm really excited just to see everybody's development, and I particularly like any stuff where there's Anakin and Padmé stuff, and we have a lot of that this season, you get to see that sort of love develop, and also the higher stakes for everybody.

Jimmy Mac: What have you learned about the character of Padmé in Season 4?
Catherine: You know, I feel like I had a really good sense of who she was already. But one of the interesting things with Padmé - and Dave and I work on this all the time - is to always try to keep her strong, but still, you know, still show that love relationship with Anakin, to show that they're dependent upon each other but she's her own woman. So there's more of just making sure that we get that through, and really, what a strong character she is throughout all of it and how she's one of the few characters who stays true to exactly who she was the whole time - to the end!

Jimmy Mac: So what has George Lucas given you as far as insight into Padmé?
Catherine: Well, just the way that she comes through in the show, and the way that you - and you know, he does oversee things, so, he makes sure that it's clear to his vision of who she is, and just keeping her strong, and you know, keeping her and Anakin's love relationship, that really, really pure love that in the end, causes the downfall.
Jimmy Mac: Do you think it's Padmé's fault that Anakin eventually slipped to the Dark Side?
Catherine: I think that it's Anakin being such a sensitve and deep guy, and his past, you know, with his mom and everything, that makes the idea of loss to him, you know, just unbearable. He clearly has not mastered detachment. Let's put it that way.

Jimmy Mac: I think I recall a story that something that really set you apart from the other actresses who were auditioning for Padmé was you captured certain little nuances of the character during your audition, like calling Anakin "Ani."
Catherine: Yeah, that was something I just - I needed to show that special relationship between the two of them, because it's SO important to the overall story of Star Wars, and so you know I had to make it more personal, and I knew that's the way she would address him in those moments, and so we throw that in all the time in the show, and I think just in general I think that's how people talk to each other, it makes it more real, if you're close to someone, you do address them in a different way. And I was just so glad that Dave saw that and recognized it.

Club Jade Interviews Catherine Taber - November 30, 2011
James: In Season 3, we saw Padmé's husband, Anakin Skywalker, take some steps toward the dark side - how do you think that this impacts their relationship?
Catherine: I think to a large extent she doesn't see it. I think she has such faith in Anakin, that it is not something that would ever be clear to her, until it was undeniable and at that point too late. I think she sees most of his actions, even when questionable, as decisions he is making for the greater cause, as she is, and not for his own ends.

James: Do you ever get a chance for creative input about your role, such as refining dialogue with 'Padmé would say it more like this...'?
Catherine: Oh yes! I mean, first let me say our writers are fantastic, so it's not like we actors go around changing scripts, but Dave will always let me rephrase things a bit if I feel it is truer to Padmé's 'voice.' It usually is a case where Dave and I are wary of her sounding weak, which she isn't, so we will tweak something to make sure it shows her strength. It is perfectly reasonable to me that Padmé can rely on Anakin to help at times when things get dire, I mean he has JEDI powers! But we never want her sounding like she is weak, because she most certainly is not. She is actually one of the truly strong characters in the Saga.

James: Part of her strength comes from her selflessness and her ability to reach out and listen to others and give them the benefit of the doubt. What other aspects of her character do you try to bring out in your work? Are there any parts of Padmé's life that you think the show could develop more?
Catherine: Strength, bravery and self reliance. Also, the fact that Padmé is not a pacifist, she believes in diplomacy, but is a fighter when push comes to shove. I would also love to see more of her and Anakin, those are my favorite episodes. And her relationship with Obi-Wan, mostly because I love working with James [Arnold Taylor]!

Blue Box Interview With Catherine Taber - November 28, 2011
NOTE: The bulk of the interview had little to do with A/P, but I'm excerpting it here because of the awesome defense of Padmé's character Taber gives here!

BOMBAD RADIO: Both Leia and Padmé are some of the strongest female characters in science fiction, each tries to balance their roles as pacifists and war heroes, to many the films give them a smoother balance of these traits (especially Padmé). How do you feel about the Clone Wars portrayal of Padmé?
CATHERINE TABER: Well for starters, neither Padmé nor Leia are pacifists. (Satine in the Clone Wars is a true pacifist.) So anyone hoping to see either woman act as a true pacifist would be ultimately be disappointed at some point I think, whether watching the films or our show. Padmé is not a pacifist; she is a loyalist and an idealist. Dave Filoni and I have talked about this a lot and we are very conscious of this on our show. She certainly believes in (and puts her faith in!) diplomacy and in searching for diplomatic solutions to problems. But, if is becomes clear that diplomacy has failed or will not work in a given situation, she is literally the first to pick up a blaster for the cause she believes in (or to protect someone she loves.) She is a much more fully flushed out character than people give her credit for, and I think that is actually what causes some confusion. Some people seem to want her to be the "same" all the time, but she is a person with emotions and judgments and flaws. In Revenge, she seems vulnerable, more frightened, less active... well, she is pregnant! She is no longer worrying about the state of the world from an objective position, she is thinking of her future, the future of her children... it changes her, and that makes perfect sense to me. In our show, she is in the midst of a horrible conflict. There is death and devastation all around. If she feels there is something she can do to help alleviate this, she will do it, even if it is dangerous. She believes this is her duty. Also, the love of her life is away most of the time and in constant danger. Which is both frightening and frustrating. Some people seem to want her to hang out in the Senate and never get her hands dirty. That's just not her; she simply is not the typical "do nothing" politician. She is in politics because of her beliefs and to make a difference in her world. Her convictions are true, and not changed on a whim for political expediency. She is Padmé the person first, not Padmé the senator. And you cannot forget, that she is very often sent on "missions of diplomacy" or in the "wrong place and the wrong time" precisely because her moves are being manipulated and orchestrated by Palpatine. He is using her, and is very often entirely responsible for where she is and the danger she encounters. This is a hugely important plot point of the Star Wars saga, Palpatine using Padmé to influence Anakin. Palpatine also knows Anakin is the one area where Padmé is vulnerable, the one factor that can cause her to loose her usually cool head. Ultimately 'who' the characters of Leia or Padmé are and how they are behaving at a given time is a direct result of where they are in their lives. Leia is different the day she marries Han than the day she watches Alderaan being destroyed. She is older, wiser, calmer. To me, it just makes sense that these women develop and evolve.

BOMBAD RADIO: Four seasons into the Clone Wars, over 70 aired episodes, what episode has made the most impact on you and why?
CATHERINE TABER: Wow, that would be impossible to answer with one show! I have loved many different episodes for different reasons. In Senate Spy, I just love seeing the Anakin/Padmé dynamic. I have always said how much I loved Rookies. Dee does such an amazing job bringing the clone soldiers to life. We just saw his brilliance again in the Umbara Arc. I loved Heroes on Both Sides, Innocents of Ryloth...I most enjoy the episodes that balance some action and great character/story.
