DVD Commentaries/Featurettes

The Clone Wars film audio commentary: the Padmé hologram scene
Dave Filoni, director: "Padmé, even from afar, is having an effect on Anakin's life. She's - she's come in at the last moment here again to the rescue, a way to have her kind of loop in and be involved, and you have this nice moment where they see each other but they're far apart, which I thought was important."

The Clone Wars: The Untold Stories (Bonus feature on film DVD)
[Discussing the episode "Destroy Malevolence"]
Henry Gilroy, writer: "We get a chance to see Anakin and Padmé together in an adventure setting."
Catherine Winder, producer: "And, see, the challenges that Padmé and Anakin are up against, because they don't get to see each other very often. And that's not much fun for either of them, especially with a new marriage."
Gilroy: "Anytime you have two characters that love each other, and you put them in a situation where they could be killed at any minute, there's bound to be high emotion."

Other Lucasfilm Media

Padmé and Anakin Unite in The Clone Wars (Official Site interviews Catherine Taber, voice of Padmé): October 16, 2008.
CT: "What was fun about this episode ["Destroy Malevolence"] was that it was the first time in The Clone Wars that Padmé and Anakin are physically together. In the movie, they only interacted via hologram, so this is a chance to see us together, fighting side by side. It's sort of the Star Wars version of a date, and it's always really fun to see these characters interact. Their secret relationship is so central to the larger Star Wars story, and every time they're together it gives us a glimpse into what's to come and why."

A Deadly Virus Unleashed in The Clone Wars: Official site article about "Blue Shadow Virus"/"Mystery of a Thousand Moons"
Giancarlo Volpe, BSV episode director: "This episode is really about refortifying the Anakin-Padmé dynamic. She is his universe and so he'll compromise the mission to make sure her safety comes first. It's not what a Jedi is supposed to do, but that's Anakin."

Jesse Yeh, MoaTM episode director: "Anakin tries to prohibit his own impulsive thoughts and emotions from taking over, and he is willing to do so totally out of the respect and trust he has for Obi-Wan -- even when the life of his true love is at stake at the time."

Other Media

TheForce-Cast: "In The Cantina With Matt Lanter" (voice of Anakin), September 2, 2008.
Interviewer: "Are we going to see some things in-between [A/P falling in love and things falling apart]?"
ML: "Definitely. And again, without giving too much away about the series, I can tell you that Padmé is there, and um, there are some episodes that - there's a lot of Anakin and Padmé."
Interviewer: "Oh, very cool."
ML: "Yeah, so you might get to see some development in that relationship."

TheForce-Cast: Interview with Catherine Taber, February 13, 2009.
CT: "I think Leia is like the perfect combination of Padmé and Anakin. I think it makes total sense. She has the, you know, impetuous nature that Anakin has, absolutely."

Interviewer: "You play a character that is secretly married to Anakin Skywalker, and in the episodes you've had there've been moments where you are right there in the company with everyone else that doesn't know the secret. How do you play those moments as opposed to the moments when you're alone with Anakin - is it a conscious choice you're making, to how you play those?"
CT: "Well, you know, it depends on who we're around as to how formal it gets. But definitely, they are aware, she's even more aware of maintaining a decorum so people don't see what's going on. So yeah, we definitely play them differently than when it's just supposed to be Matt and I - or Anakin and I."

Interviewer: "Let me ask you Catherine, does it change, as an actress, knowing the fate - the ultimate fate - of the character that you're playing, how does that influence some of the choices you make?"
CT: "Well, you know, when it - when I think about it, and this is probably going to sound cheesy, but it actually makes me really sad. And I've always found the whole thing really sad, when - when you really think about Darth Vader and you know, what - what made him, you actually can empathize with that. And so to be a a part of that, I try, when we have the scenes, to incorporate that. I think it's really important that you see how much these two people really love each other, because that sets up the whole sequence of events. [snip] So for me, the love story is definitely there, and the relationship between her and Anakin - and also her and Obi-Wan, which I hope we get to see even more of - is very serious, and has to really be true, otherwise, you know, or none of anything that happens will make any sense."

CT: [On Padmé's mindset during this time period] "There is an interesting situation with Padmé in the sense that during this time period, her and Anakin are not together a lot. So, you know, we can't do episodes where we're just hanging out at the house because that's not what's happening at this point; he's at war."
