THE MOMENTS: THE CLONE WARS (2008)
------------------
Season 1 Offscreen References/Observations
-
While the Clone Wars series has been understandably (if frustratingly) pretty slim on the number of onscreen Anakin/Padmé interactions, there have been a number of references to their off-screen relationship. Which, to yours truly, sometimes just adds to the frustration because we don't get to see these moments. Though in a way I suppose it's nice to have reassurance that they see each other more often than we do.
Some of the "observations" I've listed may be a stretch, but I'm sticking to them, dammit. ;)
-----
Episode 1x04: Destroy Malevolence
- The Official Site webcomic prior to this episode features what seems to be a regular wartime habit for Padmé: determinedly searching out any source of information as to Anakin's whereabouts, even using her political clout to obtain more classified pieces of intel... which, at one point, raises the suspicion of a Coruscant newsreporter about Padmé's interests (though not about Anakin specifically).
- Especially after Padmé's lack of subtlety in regards to Anakin in the CW movie, it's safe to reason that Palpatine knows there's more than professional concern exists between A/P. Palpatine undoubtedly knows Anakin's overseeing the battle against Malevolence. What better hostage, indeed, to assure Anakin won't fire on the warship (and further mess with his desired future apprentice's mind)?
- "He's probably late again," Padmé says fondly, hinting that Anakin has a history of being late for rendezvous with her. Are any of us surprised our boy can't keep to a preset schedule?
- "I guess I'll clean up the droids, then," Padmé says with mild irritation when he leaves her with droid cleanup duty. Yep, she's definitely the one who picks up the dirty socks (most of them his) when he's home.
- You know there was a stolen snog or two on that elevator ride before they met up with Artoo and Threepio. Anakin was way too jumpy when they arrived.
- "She seems to know her way around." Little doubt some of those past rendezvous were on the Twilight... hey, if a beat-up old spice freighter worked for Han and Leia, no reason it shouldn't work for her parents too! She's just continuing a family tradition. Heck, for all we know, Leia was conceived on a beat-up old spice freighter. ;)
Episode 1x06 & 1x07: Downfall of a Droid/Duel of the Droids
- Viewers of the past CW series know that Artoo was a gift from Padmé to Anakin upon his Knighting, though even without viewing that series it's easy to assume the droids were exchanged as gifts after the marriage. During his long separations from Padmé, Artoo is probably the most tangible connection he has with her on a daily basis. While not explicitly stated in the episodes, it's safe to say that association with Padmé drives a good deal of Anakin's surprisingly intense anger/desperation to get Artoo back. Or, as lazypadawan has suggested, perhaps Artoo's simply got a couple of detailed recordings of sex romps neither Anakin nor Padmé would want publicized. ;)
Episode 1x08: Bombad Jedi
- The main driving gimmick of the episode is the result of an offscreen A/P hookup aboard Padmé's diplomatic skiff, where Anakin's Jedi cloak is found hidden in a closet. Either it was a rather rushed meeting - maybe Anakin was late again? - or Padmé snuck it as a keepsake. Of course, Threepio wouldn't know anything about that...
Episode 1x09: Cloak of Darkness
- The Official Site webcomic for this episode has a brief holographic conversation between Anakin and Padmé, with her telling him she's captured Gunray and Anakin advising her to be careful. A subsequent panel has Anakin very somberly all but pleading with Ahsoka to escort Gunray to ensure Padmé's safety.
Episode 1x11: Dooku Captured
- A couple of commenters out there are miffed that Anakin seemed to be eyeing the ugly, badly-dressed female Weequay dancer on the tabletop. Come on, we all know he was just imagining how much hotter it would be for Padmé to be the one dancing up there (minus the audience, of course)! ;)
Episode 1x13 & 1x14: Jedi Crash/Defenders of Peace
- As if further proof were needed of Anakin being the ultimate one-woman man: how many other men wouldn't have at least stolen a few glances at a woman who looks and dresses like Aayla Secura? Okay, pretty much every dedicated male Jedi, but Anakin wasn't raised under those same social codes - if any Jedi would be more inclined to eye the ladies, it'd be him. He and Aayla are all business. And it further reinforces my conclusion about Episode 1x11: Anakin would eye a Weequay, but not a gorgeous, leather-clad Twi'lek? Again, I say, come on. ;)
Episode 1x15: Trespass
- Threepio is present in the episode. Since we know Threepio is in Padmé's service normally, it's a reasonable assumption that Anakin got in touch with her to get him.
Episode 1x16: Blue Shadow Virus
- When Anakin and Obi-Wan arrive at Theed Palace, Captain Typho greets Obi-Wan with his formal title, but addresses Anakin informally, by his first name. Anakin also makes no move to conceal the depth of his concern over Padmé to Typho, who likewise appears unsurprised by it. Anakin's definitely racking up a lot of frequent flyer miles to Naboo, and poor Typho's probably glimpsed more than he ever wanted to! Since his brief moment in RotS assures he knew of Padmé's pregnancy there, and he is her security chief, it's not a stretch that he might have known at least something about Padmé's extracurricular activities with Anakin. (Despite what certain post-RotS EU novels seem to indicate.) Either way, the series seems to be furthering the idea that pretty much everyone but the Jedi Council knew Anakin and Padmé were knocking boots.
Episode 1x17: Mystery of the Thousand Moons
- "I trust I'll see you soon, General Skywalker?" "Of course... my lady." No explanation needed there. ;)
Episode 1x22: Hostage Crisis
- Did Anakin and Padmé ever get to go on that retreat? A certain Comic-Con skit seems to imply no, but then, skits are hardly hard, fast continuity, and certainly after the day they've had they deserve some time off more than ever...
