THE MOMENTS: THE CLONE WARS (2008)

------------------

Episode 4x01-03: War on Mon Calamari Trilogy

-

1) "Water War": Padmé and her Jedi bodyguard, Anakin, are assigned to represent Republic interests on Mon Calamari, which is about to escalate into civil war. Despite their frequent shared screen time, there's very little in the way of non-professional interaction between them. Not surprising, given that they're a) in bubble-headed underwater gear and b) constantly surrounded by other people. At one point, Padmé leaves Anakin's side during battle to protect a fellow Senator, and Anakin significantly tells her to be careful.

-

2) "Gungan Attack": Much like the previous episode - lots of A/P on screen together, but almost strictly professional. There is, however, one noteworthy moment: when Padmé observes it's going to be difficult to escape to their ship, Anakin replies teasingly that it's not a problem, but hopes she's a fast swimmer. Equally teasingly, she retorts, "Says the boy from the desert planet." At another point, Padmé is ripped away by a vortex created by a Separatist war machine and cries out for him.

-

3) "Prisoners": When Padmé is threatened to induce Anakin and Kit Fisto to give away crucial information, Anakin is - as one would expect - highly distressed. Our most tender (however still blink-and-miss) moment in the trilogy comes when our heroes are freed during the climactic battle: when a near-unconscious Padmé is released from the machine imprisoning her, Anakin catches her, holding her closely - as closely as possible given they're still in bubble-head wear, anyway. Anakin is not seen through the rest of the battle, suggesting he stayed close by Padmé's side.
