THE MOMENTS: THE CLONE WARS (2008)

Episode 1x04: Destroy Malevolence

-

1) "Padmé?! What are you doing out here?" Padmé, believing she is flying to a diplomatic negotiation, flies headlong into a Separatist trap: a battle where she is to be a hostage to General Grievous. Anakin's fleet, upon seeing a Naboo ship suddenly enter the firefight, stops firing, and makes contact. Naturally, Anakin nearly goes ballistic right there on his bridge when he realizes who it is, and tells Padmé to leave immediately. But it's too late: Grievous' tractor beam is already pulling her into his flagship. She angrily declares she won't be a Separatist bargaining chip and orders Anakin to fire. Anakin closes his eyes and clenches his fist, clearly tormented. In the end, of course he doesn't fire, and immediately leaves the bridge to head for the Twilight to mount a rescue mission - an unsurprised Obi-Wan not far behind.

----

2) What are you doing here? After sneaking past Grievous and his droids, Padmé makes contact with Anakin's Star Destroyer, where Ahsoka patches her through to Anakin. Though Padmé seems shocked and a little angry that Anakin and Obi-Wan are on the Malevolence too, a slight smile appears on Anakin's face when her voice first comes through. They agree on a meeting point near the middle of the ship. Padmé arrives there first, quipping to herself that Anakin is "probably late again."

---------------------

3) "Padmé!" "Anakin!" Padmé has jumped onto a speeding rail line to escape attacking battle droids. In a move reminiscent of the droid factory on Geonosis, Anakin takes an incredible flying leap to land on a nearby line, where he calls out to her, and she calls back. Surprised and relieved at the sight of each other, they smile.

---------------------

4) "I've got you!" A droid blasts out the rail in front of Padmé's car, leaving it speeding towards oblivion. Anakin tells her to jump to him - he'll use the Force to help her get across. You have to trust me, he calls out. It's not a question for Padmé, who a moment later leaps, and Anakin catches her with the Force, gliding her the rest of the way and into his waiting arms.

---------------------

5) "The things you do to get me alone..." While Obi-Wan goes off to search for Threepio, Anakin and Padmé - still standing on the speeding rail car - simply hold one another for several moments, arms wrapped tightly around each other, each's face buried in the other's shoulder. When the car goes into a tunnel, they pull apart slightly. Anakin teasingly remarks on the things Padmé does to get him alone - to which an amused but clearly impatient Padmé orders him to stop talking, and the two lean in for a kiss.

---------------------

6) Denied! Alas, the moment is interrupted when Obi-Wan loses Threepio, comming in when Anakin and Padmé's lips are mere breaths apart. With a sulky face and audible groan of frustration, Anakin comms back that they'll look for Threepio while Obi-Wan goes to disable Malevolence's hyperdrive. Anakin declares to Padmé that he's getting her out of there, then immediately contacts an irritated Artoo to find Threepio and meet him back at the Twilight.

---------------------

7) "I suppose you have a plan?" While Obi-Wan battles Grievous, Anakin and Padmé are pursued by battle droids. Padmé provides cover fire while Anakin tries fruitlessly to contact Obi-Wan. A droid blast hits too close, prompting Anakin to pull Padmé out of the way. He springs into action with his lightsaber, slicing apart the droids. Anakin quips that maybe that bought them some time. Padmé says - in a borderline flirty demeanor - that she supposes Anakin has a plan, to which Anakin grins back, "Follow me."

---------------------

8) Playing With Droids. Anakin and Padmé ambush the Malevolence's bridge. When a droid is about to attack Padmé, Anakin immediately Force-pushes a surprised Padmé back into the lift, hacking apart every droid on the bridge. The lift reopens and Padmé surveys his handiwork. "Ever since I've known you, you've been playing with droids," she teases. Anakin replies with a bit of wry amusement that he used to put them together, but now he only takes them apart.

---------------------

9) Housekeeping. Anakin says they need to clean up the destroyed droids so no one knew they were there. He's going to hotwire the Malevolence's hyperdrive and give Grievous a little surprise. He immediately sets himself to work on that, while Padmé - somewhat irritably and resignedly - declares she guesses she's cleaning up the droids. Perhaps it's not the first time he's left a mess for her to clean?

---------------------

10) Busted? Threepio and Artoo wander through the Malevolence, searching for Anakin. Almost on cue, a lift opens to reveal Anakin and Padmé. A surprised - almost too surprised? - Anakin asks where Artoo and Threepio have been and to hurry up and stop dawdling, as he and Padmé rush from the lift. Possibly they were interrupted again? ;)

---------------------

11) Escape from Malevolence. On the Twilight's bridge, Padmé immediately takes her position behind Anakin's pilot seat. When a particularly strong droid fighter blast hits the freighter, she instinctively reaches to clutch his shoulder. As Anakin and Obi-Wan take to bickering over when Obi-Wan was ever going to fire back, Padmé heads for the guns herself, blasting fighter droids. Obi-Wan dryly comments that Padmé seems to know her way around, perhaps hinting this isn't the first time she's been on the Twilight. In the final shot, after Malevolence is destroyed, Padmé is back standing behind Anakin, where he seems to be watching her out of the corner of his eye - no doubt counting the seconds until he can be alone with her again! And no doubt they did, this time: after all, Padmé does have to wait for a ride back home...
